TUCSON - A gunman took hostages during a failed robbery at a Tucson bank Monday, then killed himself as authorities surrounded the building, police said.
Police spokesman Sgt. Mark Robinson said no hostages appeared to have been injured in the two-hour standoff. No shots were fired by the SWAT team, which found the man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
After demanding money from a teller, the man left the bank - only to drop his bag of money and run back into the business after he saw an investigator for the county prosecutor's office. The investigator was wearing a gun and a badge and called for help.
Robinson said the man briefly took several people hostage and had released all but a few bank employees when he killed himself.
